One possibility is water in the gas line due to pipe corrosion.
If this fails try switching to a lower temperature and then back to see if the burner ignites.
Turn on your hot water tap and wait for about 4 5 minutes for the burner to ignite.
How to re ignite the pilot light.
So yes the burner would normally kick on as soon as you raised the temperature back up from low or vacation or whatever you had it set down to.
Although natural gas along with other fossil fuels has become a very precious commodity the relatively infrequent and low usage of gas in water heaters means they score above their electric rivals.
Your water heater burner goes out here s one reason friend calls me his water heater burner goes out every time it tries to heat the water in the tank.
After about 30 seconds heat from the ignited pilot light flame activates a simple electrical switch called a thermocouple which ensures that the gas supply to the pilot stays open and your water heater keeps functioning.
The thermocouple is usually easily visible next to the pilot light.
Check out if the flue vent is correctly connected to the water heater.
